Jesse Ramirez's documentary style of wedding photography creates images that are fresh, spontaneous, and inspired - images that truly capture the spirit of each of his clients' weddings. And while the journalistic approach to wedding photography is new for some, it actually reaches back to the historical roots of photography. Documentary photography was actually one of the first "styles" of photography; it enabled early photographic pioneers to capture the reality of people, places, and events in a manner that was not previously possible through drawing, painting, and other media. But, for decades, professional wedding photography was relegated to the studio or to creating a series of staged portraits on the wedding day; no real attention was being paid to the natural beauty and uniqueness of each couple's wedding nor the expressions of love and emotion present. Documentary photography allows the photographer to capture the interaction, emotion, and spontaneous expressions of joy, friendship-and even tears-of the wedding day.
Jesse Ramirez's style of wedding photography developed from both a need to challenge himself artistically and from a desire to change the cookie-cutter approach to "traditional" wedding photography. A wedding should not be an event that acts as a background for a photographer to steal center stage, monopolize a couple's time and create dozens of posed images. In honoring the sanctity of each wedding, the task is to simply document the day as it unfolds, capturing the laughter, tears and fleeting moments of this once-in-a-lifetime event. Further changing the face of "traditional" wedding photography, Jesse Ramirez has added a new dimension to the wedding reception - the Pop Studio. The reception is a grand gathering of friends and family celebrating the love of two people coming together. Photographing the participation of the wedding guests has always been a challenge and is usually dealt with in one of two ways. Either the wedding photographer ignores documenting the guest altogether or the photographer goes from table to table taking staged pictures. These images, taken tableside, are usually plagued with large centerpieces blocking faces, people with food in their mouths, and missing people who are at the bar or visiting other tables. Jesse Ramirez's solution to this is to bring a photographic studio, which includes multiple studio strobes, light modifiers, stands, and a 9-foot seamless background, to the reception and invite everyone into the spotlight. This Pop Studio merges traditional with photojournalistic wedding photography and creates something all together unique and fun. The bridal party and guests can step into the studio individually or in groups. Because participants are encouraged to improvise instead of being posed, and because the images are often including the full body, the personality and exuberance of each participant is revealed - not to mention a historical record of what people were wearing when you tied the knot.
